Here's a little diddy I wrote for Indyprov! I'm taking their Level One class and I'm loving the hell out of it. I've been performing and teaching improv for over 11 years and I am still awed and inspired by watching the magic happen. Our instructor, Amity is the absolute Bee's Knees! Anyway, here's my spiel.
Do Improv. See the world.
Have you been dying to visit South Gary, or stroll along the luxurious beaches of Santa Monica, Spain? Or how about landing in San Francisco after falling through a hole in the Bat-Cave? You never quite know where an Indyprov class might take you.
No matter where you’re starting from skill-wise, (completely new to improv, experimented in college, or been doin’ it for years) you will have a blast, and definitely learn a thing or two. After beginning, you may notice an increase in confidence, stamina, ability to think on your feet, and over-all sex appeal.** That’s natural, and just some of the many benefits of doing improv comedy.
There are all sorts of reasons to take an Indyprov class---
- You want to improve your public speaking skills.
- You have two hours to kill on Monday nights.
- You like making people laugh.
- Your friends peer pressure you into it.
- You’re looking for something fun and new.
- You saw a crowd and followed them there by accident.
- You can’t stop signing up for things.
Each session is a nice mix of games and exercises that involve the entire class, and smaller groups, pairings, and individual games. You start out by learning the fundamentals of improv, and then build onto them each week. The games are high-energy and inclusive. Everyone gets a chance to get up and get involved, but you also get to kick back and enjoy watching the antics of your classmates. (Fair warning: Your face will hurt from laughing it off!)
The environment created is one of support, creative discovery, learning and good-natured laughing at one another. There’s not a negative vibe to be found. Friendships are formed, boy-bands created, and peace-treaties penned. Basically, this improv class is changing the world as we know it. I highly recommend an Indyprov class for anyone who has a heart and/or soul. They will both get a good workout.
(**These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. Except for the confidence and thinking on your feet part. That’s legit.)
